Anointed Students In Unity
Fellowship Fraternity & Sorority, Inc (ASUF).
was founded on August 13, 1999 at Albany State University
and incorporated on May 30, 2000. ASUF was founded
by fifteen students; Shannon Metts Thomas, Larry Thomas,
Charles Walker, Nazarell Williams, Kimberly Savage
Jones, Pamela Flowers, Shamika Sanders, Brandie Hollis
Franlkin, Jade Selma, Troylene Johnson, Kimberly Roan,
Benjamin Brown, Darius Johnson, Austin Elder, Kelvin
Rachel, one administrative advisor, Hortense Jackson
and spiritual advisor, Pastor Leon B. Gardner (New
Birth Fellowship Church).
The vision for ASUF was given
to Shannon Metts Thomas. While in class writing on
a piece of paper, she wrote the letters ASU, which
she thought stood for Albany State University. After
taking a second glance, she realized that she actually
wrote anointed students in unity. She kept the vision
discreet for two years. As time passed, God began
to revealed more information about the organization.
She began to seek God even more about His plans. She
discussed with Minister Larry Thomas and Hortense
Jackson the name for a Christian fraternity &
sorority. Unsure about God’s timing concerning
this vision, she began praying and seeking God about
the timing. God answered with an awesome sign! One
day, as Shannon walked to class, she picked up the
latest copy of "The Student's Voice", which
is the official student newspaper of Albany State
University. She began reading an article titled “How
to Start A New Campus Organization”. She knew
that this was the sign from God, but she was one semester
from graduating.
She knew that her purpose for
being at Albany State University was not fulfilled.
Shannon decided to ask her pastor, Leon B. Gardner
for advice. He gave his support along with $500 dollars
to get started. Shannon asked Hortense Jackson to
be the administrative advisor for this group and she
agreed. The idea of a new Christian fraternity and
sorority was announced to the bible study led by Min.
Larry Thomas. Five students were very excited about
the idea. The five students were Min. Larry Thomas,
Shannon Metts, Min. Charles Walker, Kimberly Savage
and Nazerall Williams. During the summer, Shannon
and advisor Hortense Jackson worked to develop the
vision, purpose, and goals of ASUF.
After a summer of hard word,
an proposal was presented to the Office of Student
Affairs and approved on August 13, 1999. The first
interest meeting was held at the Criminal Justice
Building Room 111 on September 16, 1999. The $500
was used to buy t-shirts and supplies for the first
interest meeting. As a result of the interest meeting,
fifteen students on fire for God became members. They
were anointed as a member of Anointed Students
In Unity Fellowship Fraternity and Sorority, Inc.
on December 5, 1999. The first membership class was
entitled "15 Keys to a Holy Ghost Explosion”.
Their first appearance were at New Birth Fellowship
Church. That was the beginning of" The Ultimate
Fraternal Experience".
